NHS LANARKSHIRE
LAUNCHES PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON NEW HEALTHCARE STRATEGY
NHS LANARKSHIRE has launched a consultation to give people their say on a new healthcare strategy.
The strategy, called ‘Achieving Excellence’, sets out a number of proposals including:
• Plans for a £400m project to replace or fully refurbish Monklands Hospital
• the delivery of high quality specialist services in centres of excellence
• increased use of technology to help patients manage their own conditions
• the development of more community services
• a long-term model for the provision of trauma and orthopaedic surgery in Lanarkshire
The consultation, which runs from 2 August to 1 November 2016, will be used to inform the development of a wide range of services to help people live longer, healthier lives.
The goal is to shift the balance away from treatment in hospitals. We want to prevent ill-health in the first instance and develop enhanced community services where people are looked after at home or in homely settings.
Hospital care would be organised into centres of excellence to provide specialised clinical services for patients.
Dr Iain Wallace, NHS Lanarkshire’s Medical Director, said: “We aim to provide safe, effective and person-centred care to patients of all ages in Lanarkshire.
“In doing so, we want to improve the health of the population of Lanarkshire and support people to live independently at home through integrated health and social care working.
“This strategy sets out how we are going to achieve this. I would encourage people to read our consultation document and share their views with us. This is a valuable opportunity to help us shape services for the future”.
NHS Lanarkshire has made a commitment that Wishaw General, Hairmyres and Monklands Hospital will all continue to deliver emergency care with each hospital including:
• a consultant-led emergency department
• acute medical and surgical services
• diagnostics and imaging
• operating theatres and critical care
• outpatient services
The full consultation document sets out visions and proposals for each of the following areas:

Achieving
Excellence is one part of a trilogy of plans, along with Joint Strategic
Commissioning Plans produced by the North and South Lanarkshire Health and
Social Care Partnerships (HSCPs), which will deliver modern, health and social
care services.
