Get Ready For Winter

Now that the clocks have moved back, this is the time of year when many of us start looking out our winter warmers in preparation for winter but it is also important to consider what else we can do to protect ourselves against the cold and keep our houses warm. I want everyone to understand what help is available for them, and for their family and friends.

Free help and support with energy bills is available through certain energy providers, many of whom run their own campaigns to help people get ready for winter. They can give advice on how to keep energy bills down and keep your home warm they can also help make sure you are on the best gas and electricity policy that is suitable to your needs. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the support that’s available and consider making small changes in preparation for winter by contacting your energy provider and asking what support they have to offer.

Extra support is also available from the UK Government. You may be eligible for a Cold Weather Payment if you currently receive certain benefits. This payment is given is the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days. If you are eligible for this payment, there is no need to apply, it will be paid automatically.

If you were born on or before 5 May 1953, you may be eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment. This is a tax-free payment of £100 to £300 to help pay for heating bills. You can make a claim for this online at https://www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment or by calling 03459 15 15 15.

It is also advisable to have some emergency supplies in preparation for severe weather or incidences like power cuts. The British Red Cross provide a list of essential items you will need in an emergency, such as a battery operated torch with spare batteries, a first aid kit, a list of emergency contact numbers, essential medication. The full list can be found here:

Today, some pharmacies provide a prescription delivery service for anyone who has difficulty getting to their local pharmacy. This is especially useful during the winter months as ice and snow cause a hazard for those who are infirm and vulnerable. If you require a prescription, make sure you take the necessary steps to ensure you don’t run out. If you are worried about your ability to access your medication, seek advice from your GP.

Lastly, if you or someone you know may be vulnerable this winter please take advantage of the support that is available. Take care of vulnerable neighbours and friends by checking they are warm enough, are able to access supplies and by pointing out where they can go to for support.
